Starting new

Starting a driver training school can impact your community in a positive way by:

  • Improving road safety.
  • Supporting young drivers.
  • Contributing to the Target Zero initiative.

In Washington State, most driver training schools are privately-owned businesses that we certify. There are 1,024 active private and public driving instructors across the state. The demand for driver education continues to outpace availability. This leaves many communities underserved and in need of accessible driver training.

16- and 17-year-olds must take driver training to get an intermediate license in Washington. Many courses cost between $500 and $750, and include:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction.
  • 6+ hours of behind-the-wheel training.
  • At least 1 hour of behind-the-wheel observation.

Drivers who get their first license at age 18 or older without formal driver training have a much higher risk of getting into a crash. As a driver training school owner, you would have a critical role in shaping safer roads by:

  • Teaching students essential skills to become responsible, defensive drivers.
  • Reducing crash risks by promoting safe driving habits.
  • Working towards Target Zero by fostering a safety-first culture in your community.

As a driver training school owner, you’ll help address the need for better access to driver education. Your contribution could make a real difference in the lives of new drivers and the safety of everyone on Washington’s roads.

Join the effort to end preventable tragedies on our roads!
