Before you get started
You must have an instructor's license attached to your training school and visible at your location. To fulfill these requirements, you can become an instructor or hire one.
State law requires that instructors must take 100 hours of training, including:
- At least 40 hours of instruction on behind-the-wheel teaching methods.
- At least 20 hours of supervised practice teaching driving techniques.
- At least 40 hours of instruction covering:
- Education and special education
- Skills training for driver education teachers
- Classroom teaching techniques
- Communication skills
- Teaching driving and traffic safety concepts
- Teaching methods, theories, and concepts for driver education
- Developing instructional materials and activities
- Understanding the driving task on public highways
- Organizing and managing a classroom
- Handling enrollment, student schedules, records, and reports
- Planning courses with outlines, lesson plans, and evaluation tools.
