You can take your CDL skills test through a state-certified independent third-party examiner (TPE). View a list of locations and find a testing site near you.
Before you get started
- We must authorize you to test with a TPE before they can schedule your test. If a skill examiner isn't assigned, call us at 360-902-3785 to find out who you'll test with.
- Don't take a skills test until your training provider submits your training course completion to us and the FMSCA.
- If you take a skills test before we have a record of your completed training course, we can't issue you a license. You'll have to take and pay for the test again.
Testing fees
You'll need to pay the skills test fee to the TPE at the time of the test. Learn more about the CDL skills test.

The cost of the skills test can vary depending on the type of vehicle and who you take your test with.
- Truck or passenger (excluding school bus) skills test taken with an independent third-party examiner (TPE) or DOL examiner: $175
- Any type of vehicle for Head Start employee: $175
- School bus test taken with Educational School District, DOL examiner or TPE: $100
- Your primary usage of a CDL must be to drive a school bus.
- Your test fee gets you 2 attempts. If you change examiners after your first attempt, you may have to pay the fee again.
