Learn how to become a cosmetology apprentice or how to become an apprentice training salon.
About apprentice programs
The apprenticeship program is an alternative to attending a traditional cosmetology school.
As an apprentice, you can get paid to earn hours in a licensed apprentice training salon. After you complete the required training and pass the state-approved practical and written exams that D.L. Roope administers, you may apply for a cosmetology license.
Become an apprentice
The Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) oversees all apprenticeship programs for Washington State. See detailed information about apprenticeship programs on the L&I website.
You can search on the L&I website for approved apprentice programs and their contact information. Contact the program directly to inquire if they are accepting applications
Required apprenticeship hours
You must complete your on-the-job training (OJT) hours in an approved salon or shop, under the direct supervision of approved journey-level trainers. You must complete your Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) hours under the supervision of a licensed instructor.
Apprenticeship type | OJT hours | RSI hours |
---|---|---|
Cosmetology | 3,000 | 244 |
Hair design | 2,000 | 144 |
Barber | 2,000 | 144 |

Become an apprentice training salon
Follow these steps to become approved as an apprentice program or registered training agent in Washington.
1. Contact L&I
The best way to get started is by contacting the L&I apprenticeship customer service line at 360-902-5320 or email apprentice@lni.wa.gov. You can get a referral to an apprenticeship consultant in your area. The apprenticeship consultant can help you:
- Determine how a registered apprenticeship program could meet your needs
- Complete your required documentation
- Implement best practices for program administration
- Work through the approval process
2. Wait for L&I and DOL to approve you
Once L&I begins the process, they will forward information to us to verify that your salon is licensed and eligible to train apprentices. After both L&I and the Department of Licensing approve your salon, an apprentice may begin earning hours. We will also create an account with D.L. Roope, our testing vendor, to record training hours.
