You need architecture work experience to qualify for an architect license. Learn about the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and how to earn and report experience.
The Architectural Experience Program (AXP) is an internship program managed and administered by the National Council of Architect Registration Boards (NCARB). The AXP is a mandatory requirement in Washington State for the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). You may begin taking the ARE exams while enrolled in AXP.
How to enroll in AXP
If you have questions about enrollment in AXP, please contact NCARB. Our requirement for AXP is the same as NCARB’s which is at least 2 years and 3,740 hours. For more information, check out how to get started with the AXP.
AXP co-coordinators
For more information, contact one of the following Washington State AXP coordinators who are appointed and funded by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as an industry resource. Please reach out to them with AXP questions only.
