July 2024

Architecture registration exam (ARE) requirements

As of July 1, 2024, most ARE candidates won't need to pass all exams within a 5-year period. This change comes from Substitute House Bill (SHB) 1880. The bill passed during the 2024 Legislative session

How will this impact me?

You'll no longer need to request exam extensions. This will show on your National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) record. You'll have more time to take your exams.

NCARB will reinstate eligible ARE sections for Washington candidates on July 1. Their policies will show expired exams for applicants in ARE version 3.1 or earlier.
