Make an appointment to transfer your CDL and find out which documents you'll need to bring.
Before you get started
If you do not transfer your out-of-state CDL when you move to Washington, you must meet all Washington state Commercial Driver License (CDL) requirements to get a CDL.
If your out-of-state license is non-transferable, you will need to meet all Washington state CDL requirements to get a CDL.
1. Make an appointment
Schedule a time to visit a driver licensing office.
2. Show required documents
Bring the following documents to your appointment:
- Valid out-of-state driver license
- Proof of Washington state residency
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or non-domicile document. (See a list of approved documents)
You also need a medical certificate on file with the National Registry. If you need a federal exemption or Skills Performance Evaluation, complete the necessary paperwork and submit your documents to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Once approved, FMCSA will submit the exemption or SPE certificate to the National Registry.
If you’re required to have a state waiver
You must submit these documents and allow us to process them before transferring your license at a licensing office. You must:
- Send us required medical documents (allow 10 days for processing).
- Visit a driver licensing office to transfer your license with CDL.
3. Complete self-certification
Declare how you will operate commercially through self-certification.
4. Take required tests (if any)
- Take any required CDL knowledge tests
- See hazardous materials endorsement (HME) for information about requirements and getting an HME endorsement.
5. Pay the fees
View our fee schedule.
6. Verify the document we issue you
When you receive your new CDL, verifiy all the information is correct.
