If you have Pass these tests
A valid license from:
  • Another U.S. state (driving record dated within the last 30 days)
    • District of Columbia
    • U.S. Territory or possession
    • U.S. Department of State
  • British Columbia – Class 5 only; Class 7 doesn't transfer
  • Germany
  • South Korea

No tests required if you're 18 years old or older.

If you're just visiting Washington, you may use your out-of-country driver license for up to 1 year.

Knowledge test

The knowledge test is a written multiple-choice test. You'll need to pay a fee to take the test that varies by location—check with your testing location for the exact amount. You must get 32 out of 40 correct answers to pass the test. If you do not pass, there may be a waiting period before you can retest. A passing score is good for 2 years.

The knowledge test is available in 12 languages:

Check with your driver training school to make sure they offer the knowledge test in the language you need.

Drive test

During the drive test, an instructor will determine whether you are able to operate a vehicle safely while applying your knowledge of traffic laws to real-life situations. You'll need to pay a fee to take the test that varies by location—check with your testing location for the exact amount. You must score at least 80 out of 100 to pass the test. Your examiner will discuss your results with you, and if you do not pass, there may be a waiting period before you can retest. A passing score is good for one year. If you do pass, your score will be sent directly to us.

To be able to take the drive test, you must bring:

  • Proof of auto liability insurance for the vehicle you are using to test
  • A vehicle in good working condition with valid registration, tabs, and plates

You will not be allowed to take the drive test without these 2 items.
