We are committed to providing equal access to our programs, services, and facilities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
How to request accommodations from DOL
If you need an accommodation to access our programs, services, or facilities, call 360-902-3600 or staff in our community-based driver licensing offices can assist you. Persons who are deaf or hard of hearing may call the Washington State Relay at 711.
Need accommodations in a driver licensing office? No problem. When you walk in the door, just tell someone and we will work with you to get you what you need.
NOTE: Due to REAL ID requirements that go into effect May 7, 2025, our licensing offices are experiencing long wait times for walk-ins and appointments for services are booked out.
Some examples of accommodation requests include:
- Providing a minimum distraction environment for a knowledge test.
- Headphones or audio-assistive devices.
- Service at a lowered counter.
- Print material in alternate formats.
- Using flash cards for a drive test.
- Requests for an American Sign Language interpreter.
We’re committed to honoring requests whenever possible. Sometimes state and/or federal laws or regulations prohibit us from granting some modifications. If this is the case, we'll offer alternative modifications allowed for by law.
Due to high demand, sign language and tactile interpreters are scheduling appointments 2 to 3 weeks in advance. It may be helpful to contact us before making an appointment. This will allow us to ensure a state-contracted interpreter is available for your appointment. To schedule a sign language interpreter, call 360-902-3600 or visit a driver licensing office near you. You may also email ada@dol.wa.gov and our ADA Compliance Manager will connect you with a licensing office to schedule.
Technology accessibility and PDF documents
To ensure our online services and communications are accessible, we follow:
- Washington State (OCIO) policy 188
- Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 (Conformance Level AA accessibility guidelines and standards)
For best results, you'll want to open any of our forms or documents with Acrobat Reader DC. Most reader plug-ins included in modern web browsers don't have the same capabilities as Acrobat Reader DC. Viewing a PDF with the browser plug-in may cause difficulties accessing the document. Check with your web browser to find out how to set the default reader it uses. Get the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC For information on using PDFs with a screen reader, go to Adobe's Accessibility feature page.
For an accommodation to access any of our online materials, call 360-902-3600 or email ada@dol.wa.gov.

If you feel you were discriminated against in accessing our services, you can file a formal Civil Rights Discrimination Complaint.
ADA Transition Plan The DOL’s ADA Transition Plan is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act and provides details on DOL’s compliance for accessibility to our programs, services, and facilities. For more information, read our latest plan.
